It's true: The one-quarter of the population that carries more debt than the national average has nearly 20 points on its less-indebted peers. In three separate studies of 3 million consumer profiles each, the Experian National Score Index looked at how general debt, mortgage debt, and car loan debt affected credit scores.
Experian found that the bigger the debt, the higher the score.

| I thought that this was awesome when I first read it...
Debt Consolidation Loans usually require you to secure the loan against some form of asset, . At this point you have gone from unsecured debt to a secured loan and put your personal assets at risk. Many consolidation loans are spread out over a 30-year period leaving you open to the loss of your assets over the entire period.

These are generally issued against the home as collateral. The minimal risk calls for a lesser interest rate. The repayment of the home equity loan is similar to the debt consolidation loans.
